The Internet has changed forever the way we live by giving us access to information we never had access to before. Sure, there were always libraries, but one had to be very good at finding material and there was a limit on how much information you could find or how fast you can find it. Think about it like this. When you used to go to the library the all had those big old card catalogs which you would have to search through in order to find the information you were looking for about any topic. If they did not have it there was no fast way you could get access to the information. Now with the advent of the Internet everything is connected and automated. Information can be shared across multiple computers and all over the world. Think of it as a chain. In the chain you have a bunch of individual links, but when you put them all together they form a chain. That is what the Internet is. A large Network of computers that are all connected via phone line or satellite, coaxial cable or wirelessly with the latter being today’s more popular option.
I could compare how fast the Internet has grown by using a silly little example from the movie gremlins. In the movie gremlins whenever water was thrown on one of these little creatures it would multiply and so on.
That is what the Internet has done since it’s inception in the late 1980s although it did not become widely used until the mid nineteen nineties. It has doubled in size almost every year. It is said that over 1.5 billion people are now connected to the Internet world wide. And as a result that means that 1.5 billion people are connected as well, and are able to share whatever information they want to share for all others to see.
Of course this has affected the way businesses are run. With so many people being online television is not the only medium now to put your products and services in front of people who will buy. It is estimated that the average young adult between the ages of 18-30 uses the Internet or is connected to it in some way for almost 72 hours a week. So of course it only makes since to make sure that you get your product or services to be seen by these people especially when in 2008 alone over 200 billion dollars was spent online on products and services. Granted there is still some concern like credit card fraud and the like, but steps are being taken all the time to make things more secure and online commerce is showing no signs of slowing down.
Just like in the movie example I gave you the Internet is not going anywhere anytime soon. It has made it possible for people to do things faster and easier. You can get any product you want and at a bargain price. You can find out about anything and connect to anyone in a matter of seconds. Even if you were to take down one of the networks the Internet would simply find a way to keep multiplying itself and steps would have to be taken to meet that demand. Because the Internet is not only entertainment, it is also knowledge and commerce both of which the world cannot get enough of.
